The arguments for excusing crimes, whether mundane or horrific, on the basis of circumstances of birth, is above all a cruel insult to every law abiding person who has grown up in difficult circumstances. Not just an insult but a grave moral hazard. If the only consequence of obeying the law is to have less material wealth and less status than your peers, social collapse soon follows.
It's all very concerning. It is amazing that I have lived in my own personal paradise growing up, and just never saw or understood the reality of black on white crime before coming onto the internet. Etc. Etc. This particularly concerns me:
"Then there is the Mayor of Seattle, who insists that felons who have been caught committing crimes seven or eight times might be stealing your wallet or a pair of sneakers because they are “hungry,” and thus no criminals should be jailed."
I immediately think of the 3rd world and people coming up through the Darien Gap. (I understand that horde has slowed down for now - but could resume again.) Or on boats. Or coming on planes. Etc. Isn't this a call and justification for invasion of America by the 3rd world also? And genocide of Americans?
Aren't those in Central America, Africa, India, and all over the 3rd world "hungry"? So, shouldn't then it be understood why they come streaming across the border and the feel the need to kill Americans to take from us our houses, cars, clothes, and everything we Americans own? Because the 3rd world is "hungry"? Because we white Americans have more than the black and brown people who want to come to American to have "the American dream" (everything we worked for and built)?
I just hear this guy saying that white Americans deserve to die because we have more in America than his poor family and friends have had in their 3rd world nations.
The most amazing thing is that it seems no matter how many white (and black, after all) women and children are slaughtered, the stalwart, protected white liberal upper and upper-middle class women support the insanity of “restorative” justice even when all the data and experience in the real world tell us something different. There will be a great deal more innocent blood shed before this turns around. So sad, and supported by female judges. Can no one read the tea leaves? 😬
One thing that I'll say: East Asia has the right idea in punishing drug dealing with the death penalty. Those that bring substances into our communities that kill should face death themselves. This is the only policy weighty enough to solve our current fentanyl crisis.
The reason I am pro death penalty is that it puts an end to it. Take the example of Ted Bundy. He was in jail, escaped and went on to commit more murders. The death penalty applied put an end to his murders. I don't want murderers warehoused, waiting for sympathetic people to get them paroled. I want a permanent end to their crimes and justice for the victims.
Enjoyed this article. As someone who works in the public defender space (but is also quite right-wing unbeknownst to my coworkers), I believe in a carrot-stick approach. Some of the clients I see really do need a support system to either kick an addiction or get medicated for their mental illness. However, this lack of punishment is appalling. It should be the case where we give people 3 chances with all the resources to get them back on track. If they mess again, then life in a cell for you.
These "chances" you speak of - those are another person's well-being. Joy. Safety. And often life. Someone's child.
And all those "resources", they are taken from the communities that need them. People who have done no harm. Some who are struggling due to misfortune.
I notice the irony of a "public defender" who defends criminals instead of the public. If you were held accountable for every sociopaths that you had helped back to find his next victim, you'd be singing a different song; hoarse.
I have to wonder, how many? Do you even know how much blood is on your hands?
You don't know how the justice system works. All the public defender does is defend. It can't drop charges or sentence/not sentence anyone. All that power is with the prosecutor and the judge. All we do is make a case and recommendations. All those lenient plea deals are approved by the prosecutor, and either can be followed or dismissed by the judge.
No one steals designer shoes or bags because they're hungry. They steal food. And people largely do what they want to do. God doesn't excuse your sin because you were poor when you were brought up. He doesn't give anyone a free pass because of the circumstances of their birth, because He says, You are without excuse, Man.... You know better, but you choose to do it anyway.
Indeed. As the quote goes, “remember that even when those who move you be kings or men of power, your soul is in your keeping alone. When you stand before God, you cannot say 'but I was told by others to do thus,' or that 'virtue was not convenient at the time.' This will not suffice. Remember that".
Excellent! My pet peeve is the fashion for focusing on Intent and not Action, which I fear came from the M'Naghten Rule (1843), which became the foundation for U.S. insanity law.
The rule came from the case of Daniel M'Naghten, who killed a man while under the delusion that he was being persecuted. The court found him not guilty by reason of insanity, leading to the principle that:
A defendant is not responsible if, due to a mental disease or defect, they did not know what they were doing or did not know it was wrong.
The arguments for excusing crimes, whether mundane or horrific, on the basis of circumstances of birth, is above all a cruel insult to every law abiding person who has grown up in difficult circumstances. Very true point
I think that this article plays to my bias and tells me what I already knew. Thanks. Good article.
Thanks! Hopefully it will get more people using his lordship’s quote about hangings
I really did like the Lordship's quote as a lead-in. Nicely done.
Thank you!

And that's exactly what's happening, and has been happening for a generation or more, now.
Me? I'm hungry for justice and a civilized society.

It’s quite infuriating. I really RFK think they enjoy seeing crime committed
liberal learning is very resistant to outcomes, that's what defines them.
Indeed
It just hasn't landed on their doorstep yet.

Absolutely. I 100% agree
The restorative justice model has turned the United States in the last 40 years from a high trust society to a third world no trust society. Sad.
Indeed. Lee Kuan Yew took Singapore from Third World to First; restorative justice has taken America from First World to Third
I’m giving this one a “like” BEFORE reading it.
Haha. Nice
and, it turns out, we were correct!

Yes. This is my big concern with Bukele in El Salvador: warehousing those criminals makes them a future threat, of the left wins

Interesting, thanks for the perspective!

We need to clone President Bukele for distribution around the West.

There is a small amount of criminals that are un-reformable. There is no other way, sadly.

"But I did eat breakfast."
Gee, I loved this. Best 80 bucks I ever spent!!!
Thank you, James!
Whosoever sheds man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed. That's God's punishment for murder.
Indeed. And that comes early in Genesis, if I remember right. So important it was with us from the beginning
Mr. Kurtz was right: "Exterminate all the brutes!"
Hang them high
