Manufacturing was offshored as it was being destroyed in the US. Offshoring it just helped hide the domestic issues.
I know an old man who after his stint in the Navy came home to his state in the Midwest, got married and decided to try and work at the manufacturing company his father had worked at. He got told they would love to hire him, but they couldn’t because he was about 2 shades lighter than anyone they could hire. This was a result of the 1964 civil rights act and the resulting court cases that put affirmative action into law. He had to leave his home and move to the west coast to find work. This old man is not even a boomer. He is silent generation.
Let’s not pretend that being forced to hire low-iq niggers and other non-whites at gunpoint hasn’t destroyed domestic manufacturing as much if not more than free trade has. Detroit was called the Paris of the US.

The reason our stock market has made so many American millionaires of pensioners is because the US created a very large global market and then resisted the urge to crush the US companies that formed to kick.ass in those markets.

It’s that the wine for textiles trade is considered the classic example of comparative advantage because Smith wrote about it, but the truth is that Portugal suffered mightily from it, and England profited at Portugal’s expense because of the treaty terms. That’s very much not “comparative advantage” as people talk about it. So then if you look at other trade deals through that same lens, such as America becoming suddenly reliant on Southeast Asia for consumer electronics, we’re in a position more like Portugal than England in the reality of the classic example, which is no good
This isn’t accurate, the Japanese are by far the most Western. Singapore is a close second, but is a grouping rather than one group. In any case, my point isn’t that they shouldn’t necessarily succeed, but that there’s nothing we import from them that we can’t make here
