Before he was the Swamp Fox, Francis Marion was a planter of modest wealth and Huguenot descent who gained military experience in the Anglo-Cherokee War during the French and Indian War. He was a cautious, practical leader who fought alongside his men, preferred surprise attacks and sabotage, and was not flamboyant in dress or manner aside from his distinctive hat and coat. In the early Revolutionary War, Marion fought at the Battle of Sullivan’s Island, and then witnessed the collapse of the Southern Continental Army after Charleston and Camden.
Marion became a partisan leader after these defeats, when the British tried to use pardons and loyalty oaths to win support, but instead angered many local men and helped push them toward Marion’s brigade. Marion’s partisan tactics consisted of small raids, ambushes, attacks on outposts, and operations against supply lines and bridges. Marion primarily fought Loyalist forces, operated with very limited equipment, and earned the nickname “Swamp Fox” after Tarleton’s pursuit failed.
Finally, the interview covers Marion’s cooperation with Light Horse Harry Lee and Daniel Morgan under Nathanael Greene, with a focus on joint raids, the use of improvised siege tactics, and the Battle of Cowpens, where Morgan’s forces destroyed Tarleton’s legion. The episode closes with reflections on the strategic importance of the Southern campaign and Marion’s place in it.
