The Gentleman Defeated: Lee from Gettysburg to Appomattox

The Old World Show

This episode covers the descent of General Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia from their feeling of invincibility after Chancellorsville to their ultimate defeat at Appomattox, with everything that happened in between. Focusing on Lee’s character and leadership throughout the nearly two-year-long painful disaster, it tracks his march to Gettysburg, the battle and why he was defeated, the debacles that followed, his smashing of Grant’s army in 1864 during the Overland Campaign in the Wilderness, the Siege of Petersburg, the Battle of the Crater, and ultimate evacuation of Richmond and surrender to Ulysses Grant.
