This time, as I start to conclude The Old World Show series on the Lee family, we have two episodes that made more sense to keep separate than combine into one very long video, I thought. One is on Robert E. Lee’s family, and the second is on Rooney Lee, his second son, a Major General in the Confederate Army who epitomized the “Virginia habit of command” and indeed was the man whose life and attitude gave rise to the famous phrase. As a reminder, these ad-free episodes are paywalled. If you cannot afford the $8 a month or $80 a year it takes to support the hundreds of hours of research, ~100 books read for this Virginia series alone, and many other hours of research and writing for the other, related paywalled episodes and articles, you can listen to the history shows for free on YouTube or Spotify. I would, however, very much appreciate you subscribing.
Here is the first, on all of Robert E. Lee’s children. In it, I cover how he raised them, how each of them turned out, and why only one of them really seems to have escaped his shadow.
Here is the second, on Rooney Lee, an incredibly interesting and sadly forgotten man:
