Welcome back, and thanks for reading! Today’s article is something of a follow-up on my article on “Why We Hang Horse Thieves”, as it gets into how high civilization flourishes when the law is just, harsh, and strictly enforced, as shown by Europe’s history with capital punishment. Europe is now burdened by horrific crimes of a nearly unspeakable sort. “Refugees” attack, rape, and murder almost at will, and the liberal governments in charge do less than nothing about it, often aiding the murderous migrants at the expense of the brutalized native born. To give but a few examples:

That is not normal for Europe. There was crime, to be sure, in the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian Eras…but it was much more limited. A few homicides carried out in the heat of passion or while drunk, pickpockets plaguing tourist areas, occasional political rioting, and the like. The Marquis de Sade and Jack the Ripper existed, but were far from typical. In fact, they were so atypical that it was perfectly believable in The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde that one seemingly random murder of a minor public figure would send the whole city of London into a panic, as such an incident was truly exceptional.

So, how did Europe get to such a point? How did it go from being a land of flinty barbarians noted for rapine and murder to one of a generally dignified and law-abiding citizenry that quite contrasts with the “newcomers” who have brought Vikingesque levels of violence and sexual assault back to the continent?

Capital punishment, and lots of it. It was centuries of executions that made Europe what it was, that let it focus on developing high civilization rather than living with anarchy, chaos, and monstrous crimes.
