Friends,
Today is somewhat different because my friend Johann Kurtz has released a fabulous book titled Leaving a Legacy: Inheritance, Charity, & Thousand-Year Families. The book is a particularly important one in this present moment, as it is a defense of tradition and legacy at the familial level, something that has been quite lost in our age of democracy, “philanthropy,” and deracination. Holding onto family traditions by building with an eye toward dynasty is integral to reversing that, and restoring governance by the best rather than rule by the most middling bureaucrats who are waging war on our heritage and traditions. It is, thus, a book that I think all of y’all would get quite a bit out of reading and which I would like to help promote.
Because it was only released on Monday (though I received an advance copy over the weekend, and thus could take some notes ahead of time), I have not yet finished my full, written review of it. That review will come out tomorrow. Today, I am releasing the podcast that Johann and I recorded in which we discuss Leaving a Legacy. Hopefully the change of schedule is not too annoying, and you find the podcast as interesting to listen to or watch as I did while recording it. Johann is fabulously thoughtful, and addresses the issues discussed in the book with humility and grace.
If you would prefer to wait for something written, that’ll be coming out tomorrow morning. But I would recommend the podcast, in the interim.
In this episode, Will and Johann Kurtz discuss Johann’s fabulous new book, Leaving a Legacy, with a focus on what can be done to build a dynasty and teach the right values to family members. They discuss charity, Christian theology surrounding inheritance and weatlh, what sort of assets are most conducive to a successful, long-term family, and what sorts of hobbies and activities tend toward inculcating the right spirit. They also discuss the virtue of seriousness, and Johann’s nascent project, which is building an intentional community abroad.
