Society needs all kinds of men, from farmers and shopkeepers to soldiers to writers, painters, musicians, and dancers, etc. But I read or watched somewhere that before the Industrial Revolution and the specialization of professions, people would have multiple professions. A man could be a farmer for part of the year, a preacher on Sundays, a carpenter, a woodsman, etc. Thoughts?
One other distinguishing feature of those men, though particularly before the industrial revolution was their desire to rise and society and their tendency towards aiming for something more than mere existence or accumulation

Very true. Tocqueville wrote about this

Yeah, I’m not entirely Anti-Industrial Revolution, but it did do much damage to the old way life.
